.......You are going to be guided by Maj.
Paul Naish (Retd). Paul is ex Rhodesian and SA
intelligence. You can be assured he knows his stuff and
in my view has best understanding of Southern African
history / battles of any qualified guide in SA.

........Number 1 Column:
Under the guidance of the enthusiastic and highly
knowledgeable Paul Naish (GBG) (is that man human, or a
walking database of African history?) we followed the
route of Pearson's No 1 Column as it wound its way
across the boulder-strewn terrain of coastal Zululand.
On 22nd From the plain below, Paul vividly described the
difficulties of traversing the ground with ox-wagons
before we ascended the spur.......
All in all a wonderful tour,....

Guild of Battlefields Guides (GBG)
....The majority of the guiding was done by someone with
an incredible memory, vast experience, wide
understanding of South Africa's complex history and who
had a committed sense of purpose, Paul, that was
you........! Thank you for your professionalism,
friendship and hospitality on what will be an enviably
memorable chapter in our lives.

Paul has
trained rangers in Virunga, Garamba and the Okapi Faunal
Reserve in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
and has coped well in some of the most testing of
environments. We brought him in because we had heard
that he was one of the most experienced men in Africa at
setting up this kind of infrastructure, and we brought
him back time and again because he was able to
consistently deliver first class training programmes
under some of the most challenging conditions and our
successes are entirely thanks to him. Paul’s courses
have always been thorough, demanding, and adapted to
local requirements. He comes with bags of good humour,
enthusiasm and determination and I know of no other man
who can draw on 30 years or so experience in this field
to enrich training programmes and get results. Handling
informants, knowing what kind of questions to ask a
suspect, and how to ask them, how to read the signs at
the scene of a crime (poaching camp etc) – are skills
that come with the right training and a lot of practice.
Paul will take them through step by step what needs to
be done and will show them how to do it…

Paul,
just a brief note of thanks for your excellent guiding
of some ignorant rooineks, as well as some more
knowledgeable burgers. Your knowledge of the battles,
the terrain, the strategies and the personalities is
encyclopaedic but your empathy for certain of the
protagonists was a factor for which those of us who
didn't know you were unprepared and which moved me
greatly. The fact that I have been stimulated to read
further and to want to return yet again is testament to
your ability to capture the imagination of your
listeners.
Thanks again and best wishes,

Research testimonial
....to express my gratitude of doing research on my
great grand father (who died in the Zulu war). I am not
the only grateful one, but also the extended members of
the greater family. The contents of our e-mails have
been e-mailed all over the world, and they, like me, are
amazed at what lengths you went to, to source the
information.......

The Hill of Squandered Valour - the story of
Spionkop 24 Jan 1900
Major Paul Naish (rtd) has not only been a constant
support but on the many times we have walked the summit
of Spionkop together, his enquiring mind sharpened by a
lifetime in military intelligence, would invariably pose
a new facet of the battle to explore.......

Well I could wax lyrical and go on for hours about the
trip but I think the quickest way is to say that it was
simply;
THE BEST BATTLEFIELD TRIP THAT I HAVE EVER UNDERTAKEN.
And the truth of the matter is that without your
complete dedication and hard work it would not have been
the wonderful success that it was. Thank you so much
mate, its a trip that I will never forget.
