BATTLEFIELD TOURS
South
Africa has had a turbulent history at times and some of
the most talked about military campaigns have taken
place on its soil. From the savagery of the Zulu wars at
the time of Shaka, through the Anglo-Zulu wars with its
spectacular battles (including Rorke’s Drift where 11
Victoria Crosses were won), to the bitter campaign
fought between Boer and the Empire in 1880-1881 and
1899-1902.
The cinema has certainly put many of the battles in the
forefront of people’s imagination. “Shaka Zulu”,
“Breaker Morant”, “Zulu Dawn” and of course, the
wonderful, iconic “Zulu” that launched the career of
Michael Caine. These films have sparked an interest in
thousands of people who have come to South Africa, to
see the places for themselves and bring history to life.
So why not join them or tailor-make your own individual
tour?
A leading expert in both the
Anglo-Zulu War and Boer War, Major Paul Naish has led
significant and important research in recent years, also
appearing in many documentaries and lecturing widely. As
a former military man himself, Paul lends a unique
personal insight into the conflicts of this great land,
both 200 years ago until today – the lessons of history
have profound resonance on modern conflict.
Over the past 20 years, Paul has led foreign
dignitaries, historians, military enthusiasts and school
history students around the battlefields and with his
deep knowledge of not only the causes and the battles of
South Africa’s wars but also the people who fought them,
he enthrals everyone who hears him.
You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy these
tours, as Paul caters to all levels of interest and
angle. Instilling a human edge on his subject, his aim
is to impart a special, personal and memorable
experience..
African Byways can take you on trips of any campaign
that you wish or concentrate on specific battles, if you
are looking for a little more in-depth knowledge. Many
people have come because they have a family connection
and Paul has been able to arrange many tours that look
at individual regiments. We also specialise in
regimental tours for serving army and navy units. Many
of the battles took place in some of South Africa’s most
spectacular landscapes. The dramatic Isandlwana is one
such example, where the Zulu army wiped out 1500 British
soldiers in just a few hours in 1879. Our battlefield
tours are a not to be missed experience.
